Midigama – Gertrud and Preben

I want you to meet Gertrud, 68, and Preben, 73, from Denmark. They have a nice story how they ended up in Sri Lanka.
Gertrud and Preben had been sitting in front of the television on Sunday, when Preben had noticed cheap flights to Sri Lanka. They had no intention of doing a trip that winter, but as they saw the offer for cheap flights, they decided to take the chance. On Tuesday they were already in the plane. They had no time to make any pre-arrangements so when they arrived to the airport they just asked a young man if they could borrow his Lonely Planet to see where to go. The man did not have a book to borrow, instead he just instructed Gertrud and Preben to go to Midigama: “It’s a cool place”.
Most people travel to Midigama by taxi, but it comes close to 100 euros. So they took the train, they took a bus, they took another bus and asked a tuk tuk driver to take them to a hostel. And so they arrived to Midigama. We ended up staying in the same hostel with them. Very basic surf hostel, 4 euros per night.
When I asked them if I could post their spontaneous and brave story in the blog, Gertrud just said: “Yes, just remember to write down that people must take a chance when it’s there. No excuses.”
So cool. I think I wanna be like them when I grow up.
